A Crisis We Can No Longer Ignore

Simcoe County—and indeed much of Canada—is facing a seniors housing crisis. Nearly 40,000 Ontarians are on waitlists for long-term care (LTC) beds, yet surveys show that over 90% of Canadians do not want to live in an institutional LTC facility. The challenge is not just availability—it’s about dignity, autonomy, and quality of life.

Too many of our elders are being left with limited, unsuitable choices. Health outcomes in institutional care are poor, social isolation is common, and the average stay in an LTC home is just 12–24 months—often marked by rapid health deterioration. It’s time for a new approach.

A New Vision for Aging

The Seniors Housing Alliance – Simcoe County (SHA) is a leader in Options for Aging Well. Our vision is bold but clear: to enable seniors to age safely, socially connected, and close to essential services—without being institutionalized.

We believe every senior deserves the right to:

  • Age in place with the support they need.
  • Live in co-housing communities designed for dignity and connection.
  • Access affordable, inclusive housing options tailored to evolving health and social needs.

This isn’t just about housing—it’s about reimagining how we care for and honour our aging population.

Why Your Support Matters

There are tremendous social and economic benefits to supporting this mission:

  • Better Health Outcomes: Community-based models outperform LTC institutions in sustaining health, reducing isolation, and prolonging independence.

  • Cost-Effective Solutions: Ontario spends $183/day to support a senior in LTC vs. just over $100/day for homecare. Aging in place isn't just preferred—it's smarter fiscal policy.

  • Freeing Up Housing Stock: Each senior who moves into well-designed co-housing can free up an underutilized family home for younger generations, helping ease the broader housing crisis.

  • Stronger Communities: Intergenerational housing and naturally occurring retirement communities (NORCs) create resilient, socially rich neighbourhoods.

The Opportunity for Impact

Investing in SHA initiatives means:

  • Being part of pilot projects that demonstrate scalable models for aging well.

  • Helping co-create and co-design housing options that reflect real community needs.

  • Supporting education, advocacy, and innovation that inspire systemic change.

  • Aligning your organization with values of equity, inclusion, and respect for elders.
