At the Seniors Housing Alliance – Simcoe County, we believe that every senior deserves to age with dignity, in a place that is safe, connected, and nurturing. But today, Canada — and Simcoe County in particular — faces a senior housing crisis. Institutional models like long-term care (LTC) facilities are overburdened, under-resourced, and often misaligned with what seniors actually want.
That’s why advocacy is a foundational pillar of our work.
We collaborate with municipal, provincial, and federal leaders to shape policy and investment decisions that reflect the real needs and preferences of aging citizens.
We push for inclusive, community-oriented alternatives — such as co-housing, intergenerational housing, and accessible home modifications — that enable seniors to remain active, safe, and independent.
While Ontario continues to invest billions into traditional LTC expansion, we advocate for reallocated funding to home and community care solutions that deliver better outcomes and greater personal agency for elders.
Research shows that health deteriorates faster in institutional care. We work to replace institutionalization with personalized, community-anchored models that improve quality of life.
It costs $183/day to house someone in LTC, but just over $100/day to provide homecare. We promote policy changes that empower seniors to direct funding to the services they choose.
We advocate for policies and tools that support seniors — and their families — in understanding and accessing co-living, shared housing, and aging-in-place options.
We coordinate with developers, planners, and municipalities to identify land and promote housing models that are well-located and socially designed for aging well.
By fostering policy support for NORC-based community supports, we encourage building on what already exists — apartment buildings, condos, and neighborhoods where seniors live — to deliver care, nutrition, and connection at the doorstep.
We need courage, imagination, and collective will to build a better future for aging. Whether you’re a policymaker, developer, service provider, caregiver, or senior, you have a role to play.
Let’s work together to create a Simcoe County where every older adult can thrive — not just survive.
