As we age, many of us require some support to maintain our independence, safety, and dignity—especially when facing the challenges of mobility, health conditions, or isolation. The Seniors Housing Alliance – Simcoe County (SHA–SC) advocates for expanding and improving Support Services that make aging at home or in the community not only possible but fulfilling.
Support Services allow seniors to remain in their own homes—or in community-based co-housing and shared living spaces—by assisting with everyday tasks known as Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). These include:
Without these services, many seniors are forced into institutional Long-Term Care settings—often prematurely and against their wishes. Over 90% of Canadians say they want to avoid ending up in a nursing home. Support Services are key to offering alternatives.
We believe that seniors should have control over the supports they receive. That’s why SHA–SC supports funding models that direct home care dollars straight to individuals and their families. This allows for personalized service selection, continuity of care, and greater satisfaction.
Providing these services in the community—rather than through institutional LTC settings—is also more cost-effective. In Ontario:
SHA–SC is working with municipalities, non-profits, and private providers to create integrated service ecosystems that meet the real needs of Simcoe County’s seniors. We advocate for:
Whether you’re a senior, a caregiver, a service provider, or an organization interested in partnering with us, Support Services are a critical part of the solution to Simcoe County’s senior housing crisis. Let’s reimagine aging—not as a time of decline, but as a phase of life supported with dignity, purpose, and care.
