Most Canadians want to remain in their own homes as they age. At the Simcoe County Seniors Housing Alliance (SHA-SC), we believe that “home” should continue to be a safe and welcoming place—where seniors can thrive, not just survive.
Aging in Place is about empowering older adults to remain in their homes or communities of choice for as long as possible, with the right support and modifications to ensure comfort, safety, and connection.
Long-term care institutions are not the only option. In fact, more than 90% of Canadians say they would prefer to avoid institutional care. Research shows that seniors living in their own homes experience better physical and mental health outcomes, especially when surrounded by familiar people and places. Aging in Place also reduces costs for families and the healthcare system.

Some seniors have unused space in their homes. Renting a room to students, younger adults or seniors can provide:
Programs available under SHARED ACCOMMODATION match seniors that own residences with vetted students, younger adults or senior tenants for mutual benefit.
Aging in Place doesn’t mean aging alone. With the right planning and support, your home can continue to serve as a foundation for independence and dignity.
