aging in place

Safe, Dignified, and Independent Living at Home

Most Canadians want to remain in their own homes as they age. At the Simcoe County Seniors Housing Alliance (SHA-SC), we believe that “home” should continue to be a safe and welcoming place—where seniors can thrive, not just survive.

Aging in Place is about empowering older adults to remain in their homes or communities of choice for as long as possible, with the right support and modifications to ensure comfort, safety, and connection.

Why It Matters

Long-term care institutions are not the only option. In fact, more than 90% of Canadians say they would prefer to avoid institutional care. Research shows that seniors living in their own homes experience better physical and mental health outcomes, especially when surrounded by familiar people and places. Aging in Place also reduces costs for families and the healthcare system.

Secondary Suites and Garden Suites

Secondary Suites and Garden Suites

Small changes can make a big difference.

These might include:

  • Adding ramps, grab bars, or stair lifts
  • Widening doorways for accessibility
  • Installing walk-in showers and non-slip flooring
  • Improving lighting and removing fall hazards

Seniors can move into a purpose-built suite on their property while family members live in the main home—or vice versa.

This offers:

  • Proximity to loved ones
  • Income opportunities by renting out the unused portion of the home
  • Privacy, independence, and safety

Shared Housing or Room Rentals

Shared Housing or Room Rentals

Some seniors have unused space in their homes. Renting a room to students, younger adults or seniors can provide:

  • Companionship
  • Help with chores or errands
  • Additional income

Programs available under SHARED ACCOMMODATION match seniors that own residences with vetted students, younger adults or senior tenants for mutual benefit.
